Megan Rapinoe, a prominent figure in U.S. Soccer and the new face of Victoria’s Secret, is facing backlash over an old tweet that resurfaced, containing derogatory remarks towards Asians.
Rapinoe received criticism for a tweet posted on May 19, 2011, that stated: “u look Asian with those closed eyes!”
The original user to whom she was responding seems to have deactivated their Twitter account. According to the Sports Room, the account belonged to Natasha Kai, a former US Olympian and professional soccer player, originally from Hawaii.
Social media users escalated their criticism towards Rapinoe and urged for consequences to be faced.
Just recently, Victoria’s Secret had announced Rapinoe as a partner in their revamped collection, aiming to foster positive change through collaboration with diverse and influential partners committed to supporting women’s causes and initiatives.
