Keith Appling, a former Michigan State University basketball team captain, was charged with murder on Monday for the shooting death of a family member.
Appling, aged 29, allegedly killed Clyde Edmonds, 66 years old.
The Wayne County prosecutor’s office stated, “It is claimed that Appling and Mr. Edmonds had a dispute over a firearm, leading to Appling shooting the victim multiple times before fleeing the scene,” as reported by the Detroit Free Press.
The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office announced Appling faces charges of first-degree murder, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and two counts of felony firearm possession.
Appling’s girlfriend, Natalie Brooks Bannister, will also face charges including one count of being an accessory after the fact and one count of providing false information to law enforcement.
According to authorities, the tragic incident occurred on May 22nd at a residence in Detroit after a verbal altercation between Appling and Edmonds regarding a handgun escalated into a physical confrontation, resulting in Appling firing multiple shots at Edmonds. Edmonds was found at the scene with several gunshot wounds and later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
Appling played college basketball at Michigan State for four seasons from 2010 to 2014 before briefly entering the NBA with the Orlando Magic during the 2015-16 season.
