Despite a strong start at the French Open, Naomi Osaka faced repercussions for her actions.

The current world no. 2 in women’s singles dominated her first match at Roland Garros by defeating Patricia Maria Tig from Romania in two sets on Sunday, clinching a 6-4, 7-6 (4) victory. Nevertheless, Osaka had to contend with a $15,000 fine for opting out of attending press conferences during the tournament.

Prior to the start of the competition, Osaka had made her stance clear, indicating that she would not participate in press conferences due to concerns related to mental health. She expressed her discomfort with questions from journalists that planted seeds of doubt in the players’ minds and stated that she didn’t want to engage with individuals who questioned her abilities. She was well aware that this decision would likely result in a substantial penalty.

Following her successful match against Tig in the first round, Roland Garros didn’t hesitate to impose the expected fine. In a joint announcement with the other three grand slam tournaments, they cautioned Osaka about the possibility of facing more severe consequences if she continues disregarding her contractual obligations.

The statement issued disclosed, “We have cautioned Naomi Osaka that should she persist in neglecting her media responsibilities during the tournament, she may face additional penalties for violating the Code of Conduct. As anticipated, repeated breaches will lead to harsher penalties.”

Despite Osaka’s recent triumphs at the US and Australian Opens, she has yet to progress past the third round at the French Open.
