Brian O’Nora, a Major League Baseball umpire since 1999, was arrested over the weekend as part of a large-scale sex sting operation in Ohio, as reported by TMZ Sports.
O’Nora was one of 14 men apprehended by a human trafficking task force in Liberty Township for allegedly trying to solicit a prostitute online.
Although O’Nora did not engage in any sexual activity, he was subjected to arrest, with handcuffs on his wrists and his reputation tarnished in the public eye.
Here are the specifics of the arrest from the Ohio attorney general’s office:
“Fourteen men were arrested during a single-day human trafficking operation that targeted individuals seeking to buy sex via the internet, Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost and Liberty Township Police Chief Toby Meloro announced today. The operation, which took place on Sunday, was conducted by the Liberty Township Police Department in cooperation with the Mahoning Valley Human Trafficking Task Force, a task force under the attorney general’s Ohio Organized Crime Investigations Commission. Sting operations like these deter individuals looking to purchase sex, reducing the demand for human trafficking and emphasizing the prevalence of these crimes in local communities,” Yost stated. “I commend Chief Meloro and the Liberty Township Police Department for their effective operation.”
O’Nora and the others were taken into custody and charged with misdemeanor soliciting and misdemeanor possessing criminal tools.
Some may recall an incident back in 2013 where O’Nora was struck in the neck by a pitch but still made a “ball four” call.
