Daniil Medvedev persevered through cramps and a shoulder injury during Wednesday’s match to emerge victorious in straight sets, propelling him into the semi-finals of the 2020 US Open.

Medvedev battled through discomfort from a shoulder injury and cramps that surfaced during the third set of his match against fellow Russian player Andrey Rublev. Despite needing treatment, Medvedev went on to secure a 7-6(6), 6-3, 7-6(5) win, maintaining his record of not dropping a single set in the tournament so far.

In a conversation with the media, the 24-year-old reflected, “It was challenging towards the end. That’s why for the first time in nearly a year, I celebrated my victory because it was very tough, and I felt like I could be in trouble.”

A finalist in 2019, Medvedev re-enters this year’s competition as the fifth-ranked player globally, and one of the two top-five male players still in the running. Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer opted out of participating due to COVID-19 concerns, while Novak Djokovic, the number one seed, was eliminated for inadvertently striking a line judge with a tennis ball.

Medvedev’s upcoming match will be against the third seed, Dominic Thiem, who secured his own triumph this week against Alex de Minaur.
