Naomi Osaka has secured her spot in the US Open Quarterfinals by defeating Anett Kontaveit in two sets.
Representing Japan, Osaka holds the current world number four ranking and is seen as a strong contender for the championship following her impressive 6-3, 6-4 victory at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Despite concerns about a previous hamstring injury that led to her withdrawal from the Western & Southern Open, Osaka has shown no signs of it affecting her performance. She is now set to compete against Shelby Rogers, with the opportunity to potentially win her third grand slam title.
Having previously claimed the US Open title in 2018 and the Australian Open title last year, the 22-year-old is looking to add another major win to her record.
Reflecting on her upcoming match against Rogers, Osaka mentioned, “I haven’t faced her recently. She’s a formidable player. I’m approaching it with optimism, as I consider myself the underdog since I haven’t beaten her before. I’m pleased to still be in the competition. My leg is feeling better, and I believe my movement is solid, which makes me happy.”
In another match, Jennifer Brady of the US also advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating former US Open champion Angelique Kerber in straight sets with a 6-1, 6-4 scoreline.
