Before Wednesday’s night game, Dom Smith knelt during the National Anthem and was visibly emotional afterwards.
His heartfelt response to the Jacob Blake shooting was apparent as he addressed the media following the Mets’ game against the Miami Marlins on Wednesday. Following the match, the 25-year-old Smith expressed being deeply affected by recent events such as the Jacob Blake shooting.
“I think the most challenging part is witnessing that people still show indifference,” Smith shared.
“To witness this continuously happening only reveals the underlying hate in people’s hearts. It’s just disheartening, you know?!”
“Being a Black man in America is a real challenge.”
The Mets emerged victorious with a 5-4 win, however, Smith had a tough performance going 0-4 and later commented that he was “not mentally present.”
