Washington’s football team is set to undergo a name and logo change before the 2020 NFL season, a move that pleased FedEx.

“We appreciate the team’s decision to change its name and logo, and we look forward to the outcome of the next step in the process,” stated FedEx in a release to NBC Sports Washington on Monday.

Frederick Smith, the CEO of FedEx and a minority owner of Washington, along with other minority owners, have considered selling their shares.

FedEx was among the sponsors exerting significant pressure on the team to change its name, even threatening to eliminate all stadium signage, which prominently displays the FedEx brand, after the 2020 season if no action was taken.

This removal of signage would have been the initial action toward terminating the sponsorship deal, potentially resulting in a loss of up to $45 million for Washington owner Dan Snyder.

Despite initial resistance, Dan Snyder is now making strides in aligning the team with contemporary norms. Congratulations to him for this overdue update.
