Former linebacker Alfred Williams has demanded an apology from Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy, claiming that Gundy called him a racial slur during a game in 1989.
At the time of the incident, Williams was playing for the University of Colorado while Gundy was a quarterback at Oklahoma State. Williams brought up the incident in an interview with the Oklahoman that was released recently.
“I remember it was the first time the University of Colorado had beaten Oklahoma State while I was there. It was a significant win, a really big win,” Williams recalled. “And I remember Mike Gundy called me the n-word. That’s what I recall.
“I am seeking an apology from him. I also want to see him show some personal growth. If he denies saying it, I have at least 20 people who can confirm what transpired that day… I am a bit upset because it took 31 years for my story to be published in Oklahoma newspapers. That was the first time I saw some of the reactions to what I shared.”
Williams is not the only player who has accused Gundy of using racial slurs during that 1989 game. Recently, Gundy faced criticism for wearing a t-shirt with the logo of the far-right news network, OAN. Following backlash and a threat of boycott from star running back Chuba Hubbard, Gundy issued an apology the next day.
