Denver Nuggets newcomer Michael Porter Jr. faced backlash after making a controversial tweet suggesting that people should pray for the police officers involved in George Floyd’s death rather than harboring hate towards them.

His tweet received criticism from several NBA veterans, including Lou Williams of the Los Angeles Clippers, Mike Scott from the Philadelphia 76ers, and Moe Harkless of the New York Knicks.

Harkless suggested that an older individual should talk to the rookie about the issue.

Former NBA player Stephen Jackson also condemned Porter’s comments, telling him to “go sit yo young Privileged a** down.” He urged the young player to pick a side and emphasized that it’s crucial to show solidarity in such times.

Stephen pointed out that it was easier for Michael to preach compassion for the police officers since he hadn’t personally experienced such a loss. He tweeted, “@MPJr not now bruh f**k that. Rest Easy Twin I don’t have a problem with you, Young man, there’s no time for that. It’s easy to preach when it doesn’t hit close to home. Choose a side.”

Porter, who identifies as a Christian, often turns to his faith in dealing with various situations. However, many people advocate for alternative approaches to address the issue of African American men dying at the hands of law enforcement.
