On Thursday, the NFL brought back a sense of regularity for many fans by revealing the full schedule for the 2020 season. The action will begin on September 10, as the Kansas City Chiefs start their Super Bowl title defense against the Houston Texans.
Initially, individual teams had released parts of the schedule before the official NFL announcement last Thursday night. The league’s plan considers possible changes due to the ongoing coronavirus situation, as well as adhering to state and local regulations. Each team is slated to play two home games and two away games in the first four weeks, providing flexibility for potential adjustments.
If circumstances necessitate canceling the initial four-week stretch, teams could easily transition to a 12-game season with six home and six away games each. Alternatively, the NFL could reschedule the missed weeks to the end of the season, resulting in a full 16-game season with a delayed start date.
The schedule avoids inter-divisional matchups exclusively, and the regular season is scheduled to wrap up on January 3. The Super Bowl is set to kick off on February 7 in Tampa.
