UFC President Dana White recently revealed his intention to host UFC 249 on a private island amidst the ongoing global coronavirus pandemic. Despite facing criticism for proceeding with fighting events while many other sports leagues have halted their operations, White is determined to push forward.
The upcoming UFC event, originally set for April 18, was to feature an epic lightweight match between unbeaten champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson. However, plans were altered when Nurmagomedov opted to stay in quarantine in Russia, leading to Ferguson now preparing to face Justin Gaethje. Speculations suggest Nurmagomedov’s decision may have been influenced by stringent US border restrictions, making travel challenging. White’s proposal to host the event on a private island is seen as a solution to facilitating easier fighter access.
White shared with reporters, “I’m making progress on finalizing a deal. The location where the fight is scheduled for the 18th of April is secured for two months, allowing us to continue staging fights. In addition, I have obtained an island and the necessary infrastructure is currently under construction. All our international fights will take place on this island…”
“The UFC is set to resume operations, both internationally and domestically in the United States.”
