UFC star Jon Jones was arrested by Officer Jason Brown on four charges in the early hours of Thursday. Brown discovered Jones appearing intoxicated and with a handgun in his possession.
The arrest occurred at approximately 1 am after the Albuquerque police department received a report of a gunshot on 3rd Street and Central Avenue. Officer Brown then found Jones sitting in a black Jeep with the engine on. The professional MMA fighter was alone with a nearly empty bottle of mezcal, a handgun, and what appeared to be marijuana on his clothes.
Following sobriety tests, Jones seemed to have a blood alcohol level of twice the legal limit or higher. He was charged with aggravated DWI, negligent use of a firearm, possession of an open container, and lack of proof of insurance in his vehicle.
Video footage of the event showed Jones telling officers repeatedly that he suffers from anxiety as he was being handcuffed. The 32-year-old admitted guilt to the DWI charge, while charges related to the open alcohol container and firearm possession were dismissed. As part of his plea deal, he will spend 96 consecutive hours in a Community Custody Program, perform 48 hours of community service, and pay a $500 fine.
Jones will be under supervised probation for the next year, wearing an ankle monitor to monitor his whereabouts. In a statement to the media, he acknowledged having an “unhealthy relationship with alcohol.”
