Tyson Fury made a stunning comeback to the boxing world, claiming the WBC World Heavyweight title by defeating Deontay Wilder with a knockout in the seventh round.
Fury dominated the fight right from the start, sending Wilder to the canvas in both the third and fifth rounds. By the sixth round, Wilder appeared battered, bleeding, and struggling to keep up with Fury’s relentless attacks.
In the seventh round, after just over a minute and a half, the referee stopped the fight when Wilder’s corner threw in the towel, declaring Fury the winner.
The crowd of 15,816 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena erupted with excitement as Fury performed a rendition of Don McLean’s ‘American Pie’ after his victory.
“He will bounce back and be a champion again,” Fury stated. “But for now, the king has reclaimed his throne.”
Fury’s comeback followed a two-year hiatus from boxing due to struggles with substance abuse and mental health issues. In the 15 months since their previous bout, Fury made significant changes to his approach.
Instead of his previous strategy of agility and speed, Fury capitalized on his imposing 6ft 9in stature this time around. He also bulked up in weight by consuming six meals and eight liters of water daily, under his new trainer SugarHill Steward, replacing his former trainer Ben Davidson. This additional size and power proved crucial in securing the knockout victory.
