Kawhi Leonard Chooses Free Agency Over Player Option

Kawhi Leonard has decided not to take up his player option, making him a free agent. There are strong indications that the Small Forward is contemplating staying with the Raptors, as suggested by Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports.

By declining the option, Leonard has sacrificed around $21.3 million in order to have the freedom of unrestricted free agency. Toronto has the ability to propose a maximum five-year, $189.7 million extension to keep Leonard, whereas other teams can offer a maximum four-year, $140.6 million deal. Leonard played a pivotal role in leading the Raptors to their maiden NBA championship.

During the 2019 playoffs, the 27-year-old secured his second NBA Finals MVP title, with an impressive performance averaging 30.5 points, 9.1 rebounds, and 3.9 assists. Haynes reports that the allure of playing in a major market still captivates Leonard. If Leonard opts against staying in Toronto, he is said to have the Los Angeles Clippers or Lakers in consideration.
