This decision came as a shock since he did not inform the Lakers’ owner, Jeannie Buss, beforehand.
Johnson expressed that his role within the team limited his ability to serve as a respected figure in the basketball community and as a representative for the NBA. He mentioned, “I believe I had a more enjoyable time serving as a mentor and ambassador to all.”
