Chris Davis Is Struggling to Break Records

Things are tough for Orioles’ first baseman Chris Davis. He has gone hitless in his last 44 at-bats, getting close to matching the longest hitless streak in baseball history. Davis hasn’t gotten a hit in his first 23 at-bats this season and remains hitless in his last 44 at-bats dating back to the previous season. This unfortunate record was previously held by Eugenio Velez, who went hitless over 46 at-bats spanning two seasons, which ultimately led to the end of his major league career.

In a recent game against the Yankees, where the Orioles suffered a heavy 15-3 loss, things got so bad that Orioles Manager Brandon Hyde had to resort to using a position player to pitch in order to conserve the bullpen. Interestingly, Davis was the only player on the Orioles’ bench with previous major-league pitching experience, as he had pitched two scoreless innings and even secured a win in a 16-inning game back in 2012.
