Unforeseen events are not uncommon in world cup competitions, and the latest instance involves the unfortunate cancellation of the final race. This news comes as a disappointment to fans, but nature is unpredictable. The extreme snowfall led to the abrupt decision to call off the race just before the world championship, leaving many disappointed.
In addition to the cancellation of the men’s giant slalom, a downhill race had to be called off the following day for the same reason.The situation became critical as course workers began their efforts at 4 a.m. However, despite their efforts to clear up to 30 centimeters of fresh snow from the Kandahar course, continuous snowfall during the morning hours hindered their progress.
Markus Waldner, the FIS race director, expressed how all their efforts were in vain, mentioning, “we started to damage the race line with the machines due to the excessive movement on the track.” Nevertheless, accepting the race cancellation was inevitable. The skiing governing body is considering rescheduling both races at alternative resorts after the Feb. 5-17 world championships.
Waldner suggested that the downhill race could potentially be included in the program in Kvitfjell, Norway, on March 1, with the GS race rescheduled in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia, on March 8. The world championships in Are, Sweden, are set to begin on Tuesday with the women’s super-G, followed by the men’s Super-G on Wednesday.
