Mauricio Pochettino believes that it’s unfortunate for Tottenham to have lost in the Carabao Cup semi-final against Chelsea, especially after the removal of away goals rule this season. In previous seasons, Tottenham’s 2-2 draw with Chelsea would have been enough to advance to the final due to Fernando Llorente’s away goal at Stamford Bridge. However, the rules were adjusted this season, leading to a penalty shootout after 90 minutes of play in which Tottenham lost as Eric Dier and Lucas Moura missed their shots.

Pochettino remarked, “In the Copa del Rey in Spain, and other European competitions, if a match ends 2-2 after 180 minutes with an away goal scored, the team with the away goal advances. Last season’s rule change now sees us out due to penalties. It’s a bit unlucky.”

Despite the loss, Pochettino expressed pride in his team, praising their performance and resilience. He mentioned the fitness status of some players and conveyed his determination to keep fighting across various competitions this season. “We’re facing challenges but it will only make us stronger,” he added.

Reflecting on the match against Chelsea, Pochettino acknowledged the team’s effort and bravery in both legs. Despite the disappointing loss, he commended the players for their comeback after being 2-0 down in the first half, describing it as one of the team’s finest performances.
