When boxing enthusiasts discussed their wishes for the upcoming year a couple of weeks ago, Canelo Alvarez’s fight lineup was a hot topic. It was anticipated that Alvarez would face Daniel Jacobs in a fight scheduled for May, followed by a rematch with Gennady Golovkin in September. Surprisingly, the first part of this narrative quickly became reality.

Recently, it was announced that Alvarez, the middleweight world champion, would go head-to-head with Jacobs to unify the 160-pound title. Currently, Alvarez boasts two victories while Jacobs has one win. The fight is set for the 4th of May, with the venue yet to be confirmed. This second bout of Alvarez’s mega-contract with DAZN, a streaming service, promises to be a significant event.

Upon securing a lucrative deal with DAZN entailing 11 fights over five years worth at least $365 million, questions arose about whether Alvarez’s fights would validate such a substantial investment. Despite previously relying on pay-per-view, generating significant revenue, Alvarez now has a guaranteed income regardless of his opponents. Although the temptation to opt for easier fights might arise, Alvarez’s reputation for challenging himself suggests he will continue to seek formidable competition, demonstrating his willingness to face the best fighters worldwide.
