Novak Djokovic has shown his support for Andy Murray after learning about Murray’s plan to retire from professional tennis following the 2019 Wimbledon Championship. Murray, who is 31 years old, was visibly emotional in Melbourne on Friday as he announced that this would be his final Australian Open due to a persistent right hip injury.
Murray underwent hip surgery in January 2018 and despite making a comeback last summer, he continues to experience significant pain. The ongoing issue with his hip has ultimately led to his decision to retire from the sport. Djokovic, upon hearing the news, expressed his understanding and described Murray’s retirement as a significant loss for tennis to see a legendary player exit the sport due to injury.
Djokovic shared that Murray’s decision came as a shock to him. Being of similar age and part of the same tennis era, Djokovic expressed sadness at witnessing Murray endure such physical challenges and pain over the past two years. Having faced his own injury struggles, Djokovic empathizes with the difficulties Murray has been facing.
Djokovic, aiming for a record seventh Australian Open title to add to his career grand slam tally of 15, emphasized the significance of his return to Melbourne Park. He believes that playing in Australia always brings out the best in him on the court and hopes that this year will be no exception, potentially leading to another title victory.
