In a notable victory, Pacquiao defeated Cotto in the 12th round to claim the welterweight title for the first time in 2009. Celebrating his 40th birthday on December 17, Pacquiao took particular pleasure in besting Matthusse, whom he has conquered three times. Pacquiao dedicated his New Year to training at Freddie Roach’s Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood, California, after completing the initial month of his camp in the Philippines.
