Dominik Paris from Italy achieved an impressive feat by winning two World Cup events in as many days on his home snow, clinching the men’s super-G race by a slim margin on Saturday.Paris, who also triumphed in the downhill event on Friday, narrowly edged out Olympic champion Matthias Mayer of Austria by 0.01 seconds to claim his fourth victory on the challenging Stelvio course, surpassing the achievements of Austrian legends Hermann Maier and Michael Walchhofer.
Reflecting on his consecutive wins, Paris expressed, “It’s been two fantastic days. I don’t have the words to describe it.” Norway’s Aleksander Aamodt Kilde finished third, just 0.46 seconds behind the leader.
Despite trailing Mayer by 0.33 seconds at the final checkpoint, Paris showcased his strength and technical skills to navigate the course’s obstacles and maintain a steady line through the finish gates.
Commenting on the demanding nature of the course, Paris remarked, “You’ve got to be a complete skier here — good technically and strong tactically. You’ve got to ski with your head because you can’t just get in your tuck and point your skis downhill.” This latest triumph marks Paris’ 11th career win, including victories in the prestigious downhill event in Kitzbuehel, Austria.
Mayer acknowledged Paris’ success, stating, “Dominik deserves it. We’re in Italy now. So maybe when we’re back in Austria, we can switch positions.” Unfortunately, Norwegian racer Stian Saugestad suffered a crash midway through the race, impacting his back and neck before hitting the safety nets.
Despite the incident, Saugestad managed to get back on his feet with a neck collar and was airlifted off the course by helicopter to a local hospital for further evaluation. Aksel Lund Svindal maintained his lead in the super-G standings despite finishing 17th, holding a 29-point advantage over Switzerland’s Mauro Caviezel. Although absent from the Super-G event, Marcel Hirscher retained a significant lead in the overall rankings.
