Throughout the season, Kansas has maintained its position as the number one team and briefly slipped to number two after winning close games. The Jayhawks have secured six wins out of ten matches, with several narrow victories including notable wins against New Mexico State and Stanford.
However, their undefeated streak came to an end on Saturday night when they suffered their first loss of the season against Arizona State, marking the second consecutive season that the Sun Devils have defeated the Jayhawks.
During the game, Kansas struggled with scoring in the final minutes and missed a critical opportunity to either tie or take the lead due to a turnover in the last minute, as a pass slipped through Devon Dotson’s hands resulting in a backcourt violation.
In their previous close wins, Lagerald Vick and Dedric Lawson played crucial roles. Lawson particularly stood out with a 30-point, 14-rebound performance last Saturday, while Vick had difficulties shooting, making just 3 out of 11 three-point attempts.
Despite the setback, Kansas is considered a strong contender for the national title this season. However, their number one ranking had been on shaky ground due to the challenging schedule and Udoka Azubuike’s injury, which ultimately contributed to their defeat against NC State on Saturday.
