In the recent league game between Manchester United and Liverpool, the gap between the two clubs was even more significant than the 16-point difference. Liverpool was close to securing their 18th English championship title.

During Alex Ferguson’s time, Manchester United faced the threat of relegation in March 1990, languishing in the 16th position in the First Division, just two points above third-bottom Manchester City. When they played against Liverpool at Old Trafford, they were a staggering 21 points behind their rivals.

Liverpool won the match 2-1, plunging Manchester United into deeper trouble. Currently, under Jose Mourinho’s management, the situation at Old Trafford remains challenging. The comparison between Manchester United and Liverpool has always been a yardstick for measuring success, both in the past and present.

Manchester United has won 20 league titles compared to Liverpool’s 18. However, Liverpool boasts five European titles, while Manchester United has three. The football community finds it hard to accept that Manchester United is currently trailing behind Liverpool.

Liverpool is on the rise, with high hopes of winning their first title since 1990, while Manchester United seems to be drifting dangerously under Mourinho’s leadership. The period under David Moyes from 2013 to 2014 was also challenging for Manchester United.
