Steve Wiley is a familiar face on the sidelines of Utah State’s football games. He is a towering figure with a long white mullet and a prominent handlebar mustache, giving him the appearance of a wizard or Santa Claus, comparisons he embraces with delight. While officially serving as the assistant equipment manager for the Aggies in Cache Valley, Northern Utah, Steve is better known as the Night Runner.
Since 1995, Steve Wiley has not missed a single Utah game, demonstrating unwavering dedication that even a near-death experience couldn’t break. Over the course of the past 19 years, he has elevated himself to the ranks of the most fervent fans in college football history, earning a reputation as one of the most devoted supporters of any collegiate program.
In a departure from typical college football enthusiasts, Steve Wiley did not simply attend games; he volunteered his time and vehicles to ensure his presence. Accompanied by his son-in-law Brian Lee and two student assistants, Wiley has logged approximately 150,000 miles on over 100 road trips, equivalent to circling the Earth’s equator six times.
During the period of 2003-2004, Wiley even transported numerous Aggies across different conferences such as the Big West, Mountain West, WAC, and Sun Belt, spending a substantial amount of time behind the wheel, estimating around 65 percent of the time. Despite being hired as the assistant equipment manager, Wiley’s commitment to Utah State athletics went above and beyond his official role.
