The highly anticipated Ultimate Fighting Championship event, UFC 233, originally planned for January 26th in Anaheim, California has been delayed, as announced by the UFC this week. The decision to postpone the pay-per-view fight has been made due to various reasons.
Sources have revealed that UFC 233 will be rescheduled to a later date in 2019 to ensure that the planned 12 pay-per-view events for the year can still take place. It remains uncertain whether the event will still be held in Anaheim after the rescheduling process.
Meanwhile, UFC 234, initially set for February 10th in Melbourne, Australia, will maintain its original title. The flyweight matchup between TJ Dillashaw and Henry Cejudo, which was originally meant to headline UFC 233, has now been repositioned.
The UFC has relocated the Fight Night card to January 19th in Brooklyn, New York. This event is part of a five-year agreement between ESPN and the UFC worth $1.5 billion.
The decision to move the fight was influenced by the need to reschedule the Dillashaw and Cejudo bout, coupled with various significant injuries. The promotion’s aim was to have Tyron Woodley, the welterweight champion, face Colby Covington in the headline fight of UFC 233. However, Woodley is still in recovery from a thumb injury sustained during his last title defense in September.
Although the promotion had announced several matchups for UFC 233, these fights will likely be reassigned to other upcoming events.
