Meet the Up-and-Coming Quarterback at Oklahoma, Following in the Footsteps of Baker Mayfield and Kyler MurrayThe scene was set at a high school football camp in Los Angeles last spring. A group of quarterbacks stood in line, going through throwing drills to warm up.Among them stood a striking figure – six feet tall and one hundred seventy-three pounds. Despite the stiff competition from other quarterbacks, this top-ranked dual-threat QB from the 2019 class showcased his skills with flair, even throwing in some dance moves amidst the throws.
If there were a scale to measure confidence in quarterbacks, with Kyler Murray at one end and Baker Mayfield at the other, Spencer Rattler, ESPN 300 Oklahoma commit, would fall somewhere in between.
Growing up in Arizona, Rattler initially thought he might excel as a wide receiver. However, his father, Michael, soon discovered his son’s exceptional arm strength compared to his peers and steered him towards honing his quarterback skills, where he thrived.Rattler’s youth soccer coach, Bill Phaturous, vividly recalls observing the young athlete in eighth grade and predicting a future where college coaches would be knocking on his door.
Phaturos recalled, “You know that special sound they say you can hear when pro quarterbacks throw? I’m not kidding; it was like a whistle when Spencer threw the ball; it was remarkable. A whoosh, everyone has a different term, but you could just hear it as it left his hand.”
Like Murray and Mayfield, Rattler dabbled in multiple sports, including baseball, basketball, and soccer. However, he soon realized that his true calling was football, leading him to focus solely on the gridiron after his brief stint in baseball.
