The 2018 Belfast Basketball Classic stands out as more than just a tournament. Gareth Maguire, the founder of the Sports Changes Life foundation, envisions using basketball to bridge the longstanding divides in Northern Ireland. The foundation’s scholarship program, which brings American students to the University of Ulster, has been warmly received, drawing in 34 participants.

Gareth Maguire’s journey from a simple idea to establishing a large-scale NCAA-approved college basketball tournament has been remarkable. The tournament will unfold over three days, beginning on Thursday at the SSE Arena. Teams from around the world, such as San Francisco, Marist, Milwaukee, LIU Brooklyn, Stephen F. Austin, Dartmouth, Buffalo, and Albany, have gathered to compete. Maguire’s foundation is actively promoting the tournament in a community more inclined towards soccer and rugby.

Event Director Marc Mulholland is meticulous about meeting or exceeding expectations. He emphasizes the importance of raising awareness about college basketball while ensuring that the American teams receive a top-notch experience. As the sole college tournament across the Atlantic, the 2018 Belfast Basketball Classic carries significant weight and responsibility. Mulholland aims to showcase Belfast in the US as a prime destination for college basketball events.

The total budget for the Belfast Classic is estimated at nearly $1.8 million, with funding coming in part from the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. While this marks just the beginning for college basketball on the other side of the Atlantic, significant growth and branding efforts will be needed in the future.
