Yuzuru Hanyu, a two-time Olympic champion in figure skating, will not be able to participate in the Grand Prix Finale due to a serious injury to his right ankle. The Japan Skating Federation confirmed that Hanyu will not be able to compete in the event. The 23-year-old skater injured his ankle during a practice session on November 17 at the Rostelecom Cup.
As a result of his injury, Hanyu will not be able to take part in the Grand Prix Final scheduled to take place in Vancouver, Canada on December 6th and 8th. Hanyu, who won the Olympic gold in 2014 and 2018, has also clinched the world champion title in 2014 and 2017. He has a remarkable record of winning the Grand Prix consecutively from 2013 to 2016.
Hanyu has also participated in the Four Continents competition and has secured silver medals on three occasions in 2011, 2013, and 2017. Additionally, he claimed the titles of World Junior champion in 2010 and Junior Grand Prix champion from 2009-2010. In Japan, he has asserted his dominance by winning the national championship four times from 2012 to 2015.
With three appearances in the World Championships, Hanyu has earned a bronze medal in 2012 and silver medals in 2015 and 2016. Regarded by many as one of the greatest skaters in history, Hanyu has broken world records approximately sixteen times. He currently holds the records for free skating, short program, and combined aggregate score.
