In the recent derby on Sunday, Manchester City secured a convincing 3-1 victory over Manchester United at Etihad Stadium. This defeat has pushed United down to eighth place in the Premier League standings, now trailing City by 12 points.
During the match, goals from David Silva and Sergio Aguero gave Pep Guardiola’s side a 2-0 lead. Although Anthony Martial’s penalty goal briefly revived United’s hopes, Ilkay Gundogan secured City’s win with a late goal.
Following the match, United’s manager Jose Mourinho attributed the loss to the team’s mistakes. He noted that the players were fatigued both physically and mentally after consecutive away matches at Juventus and Bournemouth, further compounded by Paul Pogba’s injury before the derby.
Mourinho expressed in a press conference that despite the loss, the team is progressing positively. He acknowledged that aside from the penalty, United failed to hit the target with any shots, attributing this to the team pushing for an equalizer. He emphasized that the scoreline did not truly reflect the game.
He also highlighted that City’s third goal came as United were chasing the equalizer, suggesting that it did not indicate City’s dominance throughout the match as they did not score during their periods of control. Mourinho mentioned that the upcoming 13-day break before the next match will provide the players with essential rest, enabling them to start afresh in their next game.
