Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud has finally broken his goal drought, scoring his first goal in about 794 minutes during the Europa League clash against BATE Borisov. This marks his first goal at the club level since May, lifting the spirits of manager Maurizio Sarri and securing Chelsea’s spot in the Europa League knockout stages.
Giroud ended his goalless streak with a header after halftime in Belarus, connecting with a cross from Emerson Palmieri. Despite goalkeeper Denis Scherbitski nearly stopping the shot, Giroud managed to find the back of the net, ending his goal drought that had spanned 14 matches.
Giroud’s goal proved crucial as Chelsea secured a victory in the match. Sarri, who was battling a fever in the cold conditions of Borisov, expressed frustration at the team’s performance despite their 17-game unbeaten run.
Sarri deviated from the plan by keeping Eden Hazard on the field longer than intended, playing him for an hour instead of the initially planned 50 minutes. Hazard’s presence made a difference, and Giroud’s header ultimately secured Chelsea’s 1-0 win against BATE Borisov.
