Andre Gomes Selected for Portugal National Team as Ronaldo Remains Absent

Andre Gomes got the call for Portugal, Ronaldo absence continues

Everton midfielder Andre Gomes has been called up to the Portugal national team. Five changes have been made to the squad by coach Fernando Santos for the upcoming matches against Poland and Italy in the UEFA Nations League. Despite the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo from the squad, Portugal continues its campaign under Fernando Santos’s leadership.

Ronaldo, currently playing for Juventus and in top form, has not featured in any European Champions matches since the World Cup last 16 exit in Russia. Reports indicate Ronaldo’s absence from national duty by mutual agreement, with plans for his return to the team next year.

Santos expressed his focus on helping Ronaldo win the Golden Ball. Portugal secured a 1-0 victory over Italy at home in September and followed it up with a thrilling 3-2 win over Poland in an away match. The team is now positioned as favorites to advance in the group stage.

While Ronaldo’s absence raises questions, the inclusion of Gomes in the national team provides a positive aspect. Gomes, who last played for A Selecao during a World Cup qualifier in March, joins the squad as Portugal prepares to take on Italy on November 17, followed by a match against Poland in Guimaraes three days later.
