The most recent memory Boston Bruins fans have of David Backes is when he was helped off the ice at Amalie Arena during the last season.
During game 5 of the Bruins’ second-round Stanley Cup playoff series against the Tampa Bay Lightning, Backes took a hard hit to the jaw from JT Miller in the second period. After being down on the ice briefly, he was able to get up with the assistance of his teammates.
However, Backes was unable to return to the game, and the Bruins ultimately lost, bringing their promising season to an end. This hit was just one in a series of injuries for Backes throughout the season, including missing time at the start due to diverticulitis and a later leg injury from a skate.
Despite the challenges of the past season, Backes remains positive about the upcoming season. In an interview with The Boston Globe’s Kevin Paul Dupont for Sunday Hockey Notes, Backes shared his optimistic outlook.
“It was a season of complete randomness,” Backes told Dupont. “Chances are those lightning bolts don’t strike again, and that makes me extremely optimistic for the year.”
One significant concern for Backes has been head injuries, both during his time with Boston and throughout his career. He is mindful of the risks associated with repeated head trauma and has taken steps to prioritize his long-term health. Medical professionals have given him the green light for the upcoming season, and his workouts have been without any symptoms.
