The recent deal between William Karlsson and the Golden Knights is a win-win situation. After an impressive performance, the restricted free agent has been rewarded with a new contract, which both parties are pleased about.In a phone interview, Karlsson expressed his relief that the contract has been finalized. He believes it benefits both sides and provides him with an opportunity to showcase his skills once again.
The Golden Knights and Karlsson have come to terms on a one-year agreement worth $5.25 million for the upcoming season, avoiding a last-minute salary arbitration hearing that was set to take place in Toronto on Saturday.
During the summer, the Knights were unable to reach a long-term agreement with Karlsson and his agent, despite his impressive 43-goal season, which ranked third in the league. Just before facing an arbitrator, the two sides managed to reach a temporary deal.
In a conference call, Knights’ GM George McPhee stated, “It was a fair compromise, and now that the player is under contract, we have another season to assess his performance and determine his value. Whatever a player’s market value is, we will honor it. In cases like this, both sides sometimes require additional time to evaluate that value.”
At 25 years old, Karlsson will be eligible to negotiate an extension starting January 1, and the Knights are likely to secure their top center if he continues his strong performance. The team previously employed a similar approach when signing Jonathan Marchessault after his impressive 30-goal season with Florida.
