As the New Jersey Devils go through a period of change this season, Adam Henrique’s role has shifted, affecting his performance. A trade in November and a new position with the Anaheim Ducks have given him a fresh start and led to a five-year contract extension.
The Ducks announced that 28-year-old Henrique, who had one year remaining on his contract, signed a $29.125 million extension until the 2023-24 NHL season. His salary cap hit will be $5.825 million, making him the team’s fifth-highest earner starting from the 2019-20 season.
As part of the deal, New Jersey will receive a 2019 third-round pick from Anaheim.
During the regular season, Henrique scored 20 goals and tallied 26 points in 57 games for Anaheim. He formed a strong line with Ondrej Kase and Nick Ritchie, showcasing excellent chemistry and performance. Both Henrique and Sami Vatanen, who was part of the trade, quickly settled into their new teams.
Ducks GM Bob Murray commented earlier in the season, “This move allows Henrique to return to a more offensive role, which I believe he’ll excel in. He’s still in his prime. Sometimes a change of scenery is beneficial when teams are in transition. It doesn’t diminish their abilities.”
Murray’s focus now shifts to re-signing Brandon Montour this summer.
