Recently released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, J. R. Sweezy is reportedly considering a return to where his NFL journey began.According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Sweezy is scheduled to meet with the Seattle Seahawks on Monday for a physical, potentially paving the way for a reunion.
Sweezy, now 29 years old, was a seventh-round pick for the Seahawks in the 2012 draft. Originally a defensive tackle at North Carolina State, he was successfully transitioned to a guard by former offensive coach Tom Cable. During his four seasons with the Seahawks, Sweezy started 49 games and participated in two Super Bowls.
After becoming a free agent before the 2016 season, Sweezy signed a hefty five-year deal with the Buccaneers worth $32.5 million as they sought to replace retired starter Logan Mankins.
Unfortunately, Sweezy’s time in Tampa Bay was marred by setbacks. Back surgery caused him to miss the entire 2016 season, leading to a contract restructuring before the 2017 season. Despite returning to start 14 games, the team decided to release him after he missed OTAs and minicamp due to a leg injury.
Facing recent injuries, Sweezy may need to accept a veteran minimum contract if he hopes to continue his NFL career. His medical condition will also play a crucial role in determining his next destination.
