The court case against Michael Bennett has faced another delay.
Initially indicted by a Texas grand jury in March, Bennett is accused of causing injury to an elderly person. If found guilty, he could face a fine of approximately $10,000 and ten years in prison. The incident occurred when Bennett allegedly pushed a paraplegic security official during a Super Bowl celebration for his brother’s victory over the Atlanta Falcons.
According to Tom Pelissero’s Twitter post, the arraignment for the court case has been rescheduled to August 7 due to a lack of video evidence that could clarify the events of Bennett’s actions on the field. The only footage available was shared in March by Bennett’s sister, Ashley, showing the celebrations but not capturing how Michael entered the field.
The new arraignment date coincides with the start of the Philadelphia training camp on July 25. Pelissero’s post also outlines the schedule set by Judge Rusty Hardin for Bennett as the regular season approaches.
It seems Bennett will likely be available for the upcoming season. Questions arise regarding Bennett’s contract with Philadelphia and the team’s interest in retaining him given the potential for cutting him without financial repercussions.
Bennett may play a significant role in early 2018 as defensive tackle Tim Jernigan continues to recover from back surgery.
