Yankees’ pitcher Luis Severino showcased his exceptional pitching skills by hitting triple-digit speeds on Tuesday in a dominant performance against the Phillies, securing another win in his impressive season. Yankees’ manager Aaron Boone remarked, “The velocity and movement on Severino’s fastball are consistently impressive, but on Tuesday, it was exceptional. It had that extra edge we like to call ‘crispy.'”
According to Statcast data, Severino’s fastball was incredibly fast and challenging for the opponents to handle.
During the game, Severino threw 12 pitches at speeds of 100 mph or more, contributing to the Yankees’ 6-0 victory over the Phillies. This marked a career high for Severino in terms of hitting the 100 mph mark during a game, with his total of 44 such pitches this season leading all major league starters.
Reflecting on his performance, Severino, who now boasts a 12-2 record, commented, “I capitalized on my fastball to get ahead in the count and noticed the batters struggling to catch up with it, so I continued to leverage that advantage.”
Severino’s pitching intensity was evident on Tuesday night, as he even threw a 100.1 mph fastball on his 98th pitch, which was fouled off by the Phillies’ shortstop Scott Kingery. Surprisingly, this pitch was not even his fastest of the night.
The hardest-throwing pitch by Severino that evening came in the fourth inning, clocking at 100.6 mph, as he struck out Odubel Herrera by overpowering him with sheer speed and skill.
Yankees’ catcher Austin Tomine praised Severino’s pitching prowess, stating, “Hitting a 100 mph fastball located at the top of the zone is no easy task. Severino consistently delivers exceptional performances, utilizing his 100 mph fastball and impressive slider pitch effectively over multiple innings.”
