The Atlanta Falcons have agreed to sign free agent defensive tackle Terrell McClain on a one year deal. As per sources, the maximum value of the contract could be over $4 million. On Thursday, McCain reached Atlanta and examined how the team carry on its rookie minicamp on Friday. He is now expected to join in the defensive rotation alongside Grady Jarrett, rookie Garrison Smith and Deadrin Senat and other defensive tackles.
McCain, standing 6 feet tall and weighing 302 pounds, had considered a return to Dallas before he went on to agree on a deal with the Falcons. Moreover, he had also considered the San Francisco 49ers Miami Dolphins and Philadelphia Eagles.
The Falcons had space at its defensive tackle when Dontari Poe decided to sign a deal with the Carolina Panthers in free agency. Over seven seasons, McCain has played for the Houston Texans, New England Patriots, Panthers, Washington Redskins and Cowboys. In his career, he has achieved 6.5 sacks, three forced fumbles and 110 combined tackles.
McCain was released by the Redskins on April 30 after he signed a four-year contract worth $21 million with the team in 2017. A sum of $3.25 million was due to him in 2018 before his release from the team. The Falcons consider McCain as a perfect fit with the ability he has to get upfield. Moreover, his pass rush ability is something which the Cowboys defensive coordinator, Rod Marinelli had noticed when he had finished his college.
Deadrin Senat was also added to the Falcon’s rookie defensive tackle in a third-round pick. Senat is expected to compete after Jarret. In general, Cowboys’ coach Dan Quinn keeps high expectations for the defensive line with Takk McKinley and Beasley Jr. Now, McCain gets the opportunity to reunite with Jack Crawford, his close friend and defensive line partner in Dallas.
