Matt Nagy was the offensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday during the Chiefs playoff loss to the Tennessee Titans. But two days later, on Monday the Bears announced the team is hiring Nagy as their new head coach, replacing John Fox. It may be noted that Fox was fired after posting a 14-34 record in the three seasons for a .292 winning percentage which is the second-lowest in the team’s history.
On Sunday, the Bears interviewed five candidates. Later, Nagy interviewed with the Bears. The 39 years old Nagy has spent the last ten seasons coaching under Andy Rein in Philadelphia and Kansas City. It was this year that Reid promoted Nagy to Chiefs offensive coordinator this year. In 2016, Nagy was the Kansas City co-offensive coordinator. He officially started off with his playcalling duties to the younger assistant late in the year 2017.
Kansas City closed out the regular season by winning four games in a row before losing the Saturday’s game against the Titans. Marc Trestman (2013-14) and Nagy are the only Bears head coach since the merger that has previously served as an offensive coordinator.
Before 2016, Nagy was Kansas City’s quarterbacks coach for three seasons. He worked closely with Alex Smith, who successfully made his first Pro Bowl in the year 2013.
Nagy will now be tasked with developing Mitchell Trubisky, who led the Bears with a record 4-8 in 12 starts as a rookie and to improve an offense which ranked 24 in the league in DVOA. As per sources, Nagy though highly of Trubisky leading to the last year’s NFL draft. This fact sure landed in Nagy’s favor during the interview. The sources further added that Nagy would be the play-caller for Trubisky.
The Bears now plan to persuade Vic Fangio to continue to stay as the team’s defensive coordinator but are aware that he has other options.
