The New York Giants did not wait for one of the most exciting seasons in franchise history to end as they have hired someone for the position of General Manager. The Giants announced about hiring a familiar face in former Carolina Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman for the post in New York on Thursday.
Gettleman spent 15 years in the Giant’s organization before the Panthers hired him in the year 2013. The background and experience seem to have played a significant role in Gettleman’s selection as now he would not have much time to settle into his new job before finalizing any major decisions for the organization.
On December 4, the Giants had fired General Manager Jerry Reese and Coach Ben McAdoo as they wanted a head start on their search process. After interviewing four candidates, they finally came to a decision. President John Mara and Chairman Steve Tisch said in a statement that it was important for them to bring in a person who had experience as a General Manager and a proven track record. And so, they chose Gettleman as he had a good work experience as a General Manager and did an outstanding job in Carolina. They also acknowledged his work during his tenure in the organization earlier.
In the four years tenure that Gettleman had with the Carolina Panthers, they went 40-23-1 and won three consecutive NFL South titles. In 2015, the Panthers went 15-1 and reached Super Bowl 50.
But sadly, Gettleman was fired by the Panthers earlier this year partly for his hard-line approach in contract negotiations. After Reese, Ernie Accorsi and George Young, now Gettleman is the Giants’ fourth General Manager since the year 1979. Accorsi was the General Manager of the company at the time when Gettleman was hired in the organization originally. Accorsi was also a part of the current search process.
