From War Zones to Warehouses: What Combat Taught Denys Kurdinov About Building a Business

From wielding a machine gun in war zones to managing spreadsheets in Florida, Denys Kurdinov has seamlessly transitioned from the frontlines to the boardroom. Once a senior lieutenant in Ukraine’s Cyberpolice and a national champion in sambo, pankration, and MMA, Kurdinov now channels his combat-driven discipline into leading a successful logistics business in the U.S.

“The stakes may have shifted, from life-or-death decisions to questions of growth or stagnation, but the mission remains unchanged: lead, protect, endure.”

Why his combat background makes him a stronger entrepreneur

While many people change jobs, Denys Kurdinov changed continents, industries, and identities. The shift wasn’t just professional, but  deeply personal, cultural, and psychological. Each of his previous roles demanded unwavering commitment, from combat precision to digital forensics and elite-level discipline. What they all shared was the need for calm under pressure, split-second decision-making, and a mindset that embraces adversity as fuel.

When he laid down his badge and transitioned to professional MMA, it wasn’t about abandoning his past; it was about applying his warrior’s mindset to a new arena.

The Rebuild: Starting From Zero in The U.S.

In October 2022, Denys Kurdinov arrived in the U.S. with nothing but a commercial driver’s license and the goal to rebuild from the ground up. He faced enormous challenges: no friends, no savings, limited English, but his combat experience allowed him to approach his new path with military precision.

Against all odds

The odds were stacked against Kurdinov and would have overwhelmed most people. Business English became a battlefield of its own, with contracts, rates, and logistics terms requiring him to quickly master communication and negotiation in a foreign language. The mental reset proved equally challenging; while combat had trained him to react with split-second urgency, business demanded patience and the art of long-term strategic pacing. He faced his new reality with just a truck, a laptop, and the mental grit of someone who had already survived much greater odds.

Building from nothing

What actually happened became a masterclass in applied resilience. Starting October 11, 2022, every mile Kurdinov drove as a long-haul trucker became mental conditioning, treating each route like a tactical operation where he mastered communication, tracked loads, and learned to navigate entirely new terrain. By August 2023, he transitioned from driving to building a business, launching his logistics firm with one truck and a single spreadsheet, securing contracts, and taking full ownership of his future.

In May 2024, Kurdinov returned to structured MMA training. He wanted to maintain the discipline and mental sharpness that had become his competitive advantage. Training with champions at American Top Team in Miami, including Ukrainian fighters Yaroslav Amosov and Roman Kizyuk, reinforced his belief that high performance is a standard, and not a season.

Combat lessons applied

Combat had taught him invaluable lessons that translate directly into business success. Mental discipline learned in life-or-death situations now helps him stay calm under pressure, earning client confidence and making sound decisions; because while panic in combat is fatal, panic in business destroys trust. His tactical thinking, developed through analyzing threats and deploying resources efficiently in military operations, drives his business strategy as he optimizes routes, mitigates risks, and stays lean. The pressure-tested leadership skills that once guided life-or-death decisions in Ukraine’s National Guard now help him lead a team of over 20 drivers, safeguarding timelines, livelihoods, and reputations.

The results today

Today, Kurdinov’s logistics firm operates across five U.S. states, with 90% of new clients coming through referrals, a testament to the trust and reliability he’s built in an industry where relationships are everything. He continues training at American Top Team, maintaining the mental and physical edge that drives his success in both business and athletics. Currently in active discussions with his coach and manager, Vladislav Soroka, about a potential return to the MMA octagon, Kurdinov approaches this possibility as another opportunity to lead by example.

The Moment Everything Clicked

A pivotal moment came on May 17, 2024, when Kurdinov traveled with his coach to watch Ekaterina Shakalova compete in a Bellator event. Watching her step into the ring crystallized something profound: your past isn’t baggage, but armor, that is meant to be reshaped and strengthened, not buried.

Kurdinov’s journey from Ukrainian law enforcement and military service to American entrepreneurship proves that lessons learned under extreme conditions become the foundation for growth in any arena. His approach is straightforward: build your discipline, craft your strategy, and own your mission. The pressure that might break others became his preparation. The setbacks weren’t failures but training for whatever comes next. For Denys Kurdinov, the story continues to unfold, one strategic decision at a time.
