Dustin Poirier is set to make his return to the octagon for one final fight this year. This moment promises to be charged with emotion for MMA fans, and speculation about his next opponent is already in full swing. While several notable names have emerged as possibilities, ‘Diamond’ has offered a significant update regarding his future in the UFC. If his recent social media activity is any indication, fans could see Poirier return to action soon.

Recently, Poirier hinted at his impending return with a post on X that read, “News Coming.” Although it remains uncertain who his next competitor will be, a few strong candidates are in the mix. Initially, Poirier was keen on securing a rematch for the title against Islam Makhachev. However, as that opportunity did not materialize, discussions turned towards potential matches with Max Holloway and Ilia Topuria. Given that this is expected to be his farewell fight, it seems unlikely that Poirier will be granted another shot at the title.

Nonetheless, a clash with Holloway could still be on the table. Additionally, there is considerable speculation surrounding a potential trilogy bout with Justin Gaethje, which would undoubtedly generate excitement given their previous encounters in the octagon, which currently stand at 1-1. Meanwhile, despite the MMA community buzzing about Poirier’s comeback, UFC legend Khabib Nurmagomedov has made a stark suggestion concerning ‘Diamond.’

Khabib Nurmagomedov Urges Dustin Poirier to Retire

‘The Eagle’ exited the fighting world while still at the top of his game, leaving fans wanting more. Consequently, the former UFC champion believes that others should consider this same path. Weighing in on Poirier’s situation, the Dagestani fighter expressed his ‘old school’ perspective.

Nurmagomedov advised him to retire from competitive fighting entirely. “I think Poirier has to stop fighting. I think he’s finished. Justin Gaethje, Khabib, Dustin Poirier, Tony Ferguson, this is old school, brother. Stop fighting. We have to recognize real things,”

Nurmagomedov reiterated his viewpoint on the ‘Pound 4 Pound’ podcast hosted by Henry Cejudo. Regardless of Khabib’s blunt assessment, anticipation for Poirier’s return continues to build amidst the excitement.
