Michael Vick is officially venturing into coaching. The former NFL quarterback has reached an agreement to become the head football coach at Norfolk State, as first reported by David Teel of The Virginian-Pilot.

At 44 years old, Vick is anticipated to be unveiled at a press conference within the week. According to Teel, he has already started to gather a coaching staff, connecting with familiar colleagues to serve as assistant coaches and support staff.

Vick, the first overall pick in the 2001 NFL Draft, had a stellar career over 13 seasons, which included being named to the Pro Bowl four times.

While Vick has not previously held a head coaching role, he does possess coaching experience. In 2017, he was a coaching intern with the Kansas City Chiefs under Andy Reid, and he took on the role of offensive coordinator for the Atlanta Legends in the Alliance of American Football (AAF) in 2018.

Norfolk State, a Division I institution in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), recently dismissed head coach Dawson Odums following a challenging 4-8 season in 2024.

Earlier this week, Vick confirmed that he was in discussions with Norfolk State, but reports later surfaced indicating that another school was also eyeing him for its head coaching position. In the end, Vick opted to return to his Virginia roots, where he was raised in Newport News, and embrace the opportunity to lead the Spartans.

As Vick embarks on his coaching journey, his vast football knowledge and leadership skills position him as an exciting choice for a program eager to gain traction. He is now set to establish a new legacy as a head coach, distinct from his electrifying playing days.
