Oregon State football coach Jonathan Smith has issued an apology after he was caught making an offensive gesture during their recent game.
Smith apologized for a “milking” gesture he made towards the end of the Beavers’ win over Utah last week. Cameras captured Smith grabbing his nipples as a way of signaling his team to run down the clock in the final moments of their 21-7 victory over the Utes.
“After reviewing the tapes, I realized that I need to improve how I signal plays at the end of the game,” Smith said in his apology. “I want to apologize to anyone I offended with my gesture, and I promise not to use that signal again.”
“I believe he was signaling for the team to run down the clock. ‘Milk the clock. You gotta milk it.’ Yeah, that’s what it is,” Fox Sports broadcaster Tim Brando commented.
Oregon State had a dominating performance, taking a 21-0 lead and holding off Utah until the final quarter, when the Utes scored a 41-yard touchdown, narrowing the gap to 14 points. With less than three minutes remaining, Oregon State’s defense made a crucial stop, giving the ball back to their offense.
Meanwhile, there has been speculation linking Smith to the vacant head coaching position at Michigan State.
The win against Utah marks Oregon State’s fourth victory of the season, placing them in fifth position in the Pac-12 Conference.
Up next, Oregon State will face the California Golden Bears in a game to be held in Berkeley, California.
