Following in the footsteps of boxer George Foreman, basketball legend Gary Payton decided to name two of his sons after himself. What’s even more intriguing is that Gary Payton Jr. and Gary Payton II were born just five months apart.
In an interview with DJ Vlad, known as The Glove, shared the unusual story of how he ended up having children with two different women around the same time.
“In the interview, Gary Payton shared his ‘George Foreman’ moment where his two eldest sons were given names inspired by his own – Gary Jr. and Gary II. He recounted the complex situation he found himself in when two women with whom he was involved became pregnant around the same time. Nonetheless, Gary explained that he used this experience as a teaching moment for his kids on managing relationships wisely.”
Reflecting on the events, Payton explained:
“When I was dating Gary II’s mother, who I met in high school, and I was playing in the NBA, I had a relationship with another woman. As fate would have it, they both gave birth in the same year.”
“Both women wanted to name their sons Gary,” GP added. “So I suggested, ‘Okay, let’s name one Gary Jr. and the other Gary II.’ It turned out to be a solution that worked for me; I am pleased with it. I now have two sons carrying my name forward, so that’s all I was thinking about – ensuring my name lives on.”
While it was a chaotic situation at that time, three decades later, the Hall of Famer looks back and can’t help but chuckle at the memories of managing conversations with two different pregnant women.
“It was a real mess,” Payton admitted. “A complete mess. And that’s the reason I never got myself into such situations again because it wasn’t fair to them. During my Hall of Fame speech, I acknowledged my ex-wife for standing by me through a lot.”
Gary Payton II has followed his father’s path and is currently having a successful season with the Golden State Warriors.
He is currently averaging 7.3 points and 3.6 rebounds with an impressive 62.3% shooting accuracy. In contrast, Gary Payton Jr. has chosen to stay out of the public eye.
