USA Rugby aims to host either the 2027 or 2031 men’s rugby World Cup and the 2029 women’s World Cup.
As part of the bid, the plan involves utilizing NFL and college stadiums for the matches. Sources have revealed to The Guardian that Russia and Australia are also in the running to host the World Cup. Currently, World Rugby seems to favor Australia for the 2027 World Cup, with the US potentially hosting the tournament four years later.
In an interview with The Guardian, USA Rugby chief executive Ross Young stated, “Several unions are showing interest. The initial phase is to explore preferences. When it comes to 2027, the timing between the football World Cup and the Olympics has its pros and cons. The more time we have to prepare, the better chance we have to be competitive, similar to Japan.”
The next football World Cup is scheduled for Qatar in 2022, followed by a joint hosting by the US, Canada, and Mexico in 2026. The 2028 Olympics are planned for Los Angeles, positioning a potential 2027 rugby World Cup in the middle if the US is selected as the host.
