Oguchi Onyewu expressed regret for his actions.
The former USMNT player formally apologized to Mexico women’s national team defender Janelly Farias after making a threatening comment during CBS Sports’ coverage of the USMNT vs. Mexico game.
During an exchange with Farias early in the broadcast, Onyewu remarked, “I will come across this desk and choke you.”
As evident from the video, his statement was meant as a joke, although it was a highly inappropriate choice of words.
Shortly afterward, Onyewu publicly apologized to Farias.

“In the earlier segment, during our playful banter, I crossed a line and made an inappropriate remark. I deeply regret my words and I take full responsibility for them. I offer you my sincere apology and I hope you can forgive me. I am truly sorry for what I said.”
Farias gracefully accepted Onyewu’s apology with a fist bump and commended him by saying, “Your willingness to apologize on national television shows your character.”
