Robert Saleh has been chosen as the top candidate to become the new head coach of the New York Jets. The decision to replace Adam Gase, who was let go on January 3 after two disappointing seasons, was made after Saleh’s successful interviews.

Saleh’s prospects as the Jets’ head coach became clear after a second interview on Tuesday evening followed by further discussions that spilled over into Wednesday. The team also spoke with Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator Arthur Smith during this time, but negotiations with him did not lead to an agreement. Subsequently, Saleh was brought back into the picture, and a deal was struck with the Jets on Thursday evening.

Having served as the defensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers since 2017, the 41-year-old Saleh is highly regarded for his rapport with players. Under his leadership, the 49ers’ defense ranked second in the Super Bowl last season and fifth overall this season, despite dealing with numerous injuries to key players like Solomon Thomas and Ezekiel Ansah. Saleh’s ability to elevate the performance of a short-handed defense has made him a sought-after candidate for coaching positions this season.
